NetSuite campaign to tempt Microsoft VARs

Hello!

Microsoft reports record Q2 revenues
rte.ie - Jan 27, 2006
A company statement blamed a 2% drop in operating income on missed sales targets for the new Xbox 360 as well as marketing and product development expenses associated with major product launches. Advertisement
'The growth in our core businesses was healthy during the quarter, driven by strength in Server and Tools and the success of our Windows Client products in a robust PC market,' Microsoft chief financial officer Chris Liddell said. 'The quarter also marked the beginning of an important product cycle for Microsoft with the launches of Xbox 360, SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005 and Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3. 0, all of which were extremely successful and well received by our customers,' he added. A large number of Xboxes were sold since the new generation was released last year, but not the number Microsoft expected, Liddell said. He said that Microsoft had resolved 'issues with components' that hampered production of Xbox consoles. Microsoft had contracted another company to manufacture the games, Liddell said.

VMware's Chief promises to play nice with Microsoft and Xen
Register - Jan 31, 2006
They would love to eat away at the more than $100m in revenue VMware does per quarter - a figure that's been doubling year over year. But Microsoft and XenSource, VMware's two main competitors, will likely struggle to grab serious server virtualization market share any time soon. Microsoft has warned that it plans to phase out its current Virtual Server product in favor of a new software package due in the server version of Windows Vista sometime after 2007. Meanwhile, XenSource is working to get its open source wares onto the market and to create complementary, profit making products. The start-up has yet to announce a single customer as compared to the thousands VMware can point to... It's databases, it's e-mail servers, it's web servers, it's file and print and servers, it's certainly test and dev environments and departmental applications. When we do surveys, the types of software are pretty spread out. El Reg: What about middleware? I don't hear much about folks putting CRM or ERP apps on virtual machines. We have people that want to run Siebel, PeopleSoft, SAP and all that stuff too. El Reg: You just seem to hear much less about that than say web serving in a virtual machine. DG: We now have all the ISVs supporting their software in a virtual machine.

Microsoft says e-government will offer savings
InfoWorld - Feb 1, 2006
"Your governments recognize these opportunities, and you've set some goals. "Microsoft announced a plan earlier this week to capture government business with its Public Services and eGovernment Strategy, part of its Microsoft Connected Government Framework program. The plan is aimed at helping governments map out a service delivery strategy with its IT systems, focusing on identity management, customer relationship management (CRM) and case management, along with document and forms management. Elliott said e-government systems can eliminate red tape and break through "mind-numbing bureaucracy. " The cost of inefficient bureaucracy is estimated at €400 billion (US$484 billion) every year in Europe, she said. In the United States, it amounts to around $843 billion per year, she said. If governments could save 15 percent of those costs, the savings would amount to 1.

Google Lawsuit to be Heard in Feb. - CIO News Alerts - News - CIO

District Judge James Ware set the date for the hearing. The court will attempt to determine whether or not Google will have to provide the records the Department of Justice (DOJ) has demanded, and in doing so, help the DOJ with an anti-pornography suit. The DOJ asked for the same records from other Internet heavies like Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL; however, Google was the only company to refuse the request and fight the subpoena in court. Last week, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said the DOJ would not roll over. "This is important for the Department of Justice, and we will pursue this matter. Microsoft to Phase Out Windows Media Player for Mac

Salesforce pitches to become the 'iTunes' of enterprise apps
Register - Jan 17, 2006
Their introduction follows last year's outage in the Salesforce. com service that Benioff said was due to a bug the company hadn’t “seen before. ”Benioff believes AppExchange helps maintain Salesforce. com's lead over CRM rivals Oracle and SAP and aspiring player Microsoft. All three have spoken of separately providing their own hosted CRM services and integrating their underling software architectures. In a pointed stab at the trio, Benioff said: "A lot of companies are not here. They are still back talking about stacks of applications, delivering it on old technology and delivering stacks on old CDs.

Microsoft to Phase Out Windows Media Player for Mac
MacNewsWorld - Jan 13, 2006
Despite a new agreement announced at Macworld -- a five-year deal under which Microsoft will develop new versions of Microsoft Office for PowerPC as well as for the new Intel-based iMacs -- the software giant has been withdrawing development support for many Mac products, King told CRM Buyer, such as Internet Explorer for Mac and MSN for Mac. "The argument Microsoft typically makes is that these decisions are revenue-based," he said, meaning Mac has provided Microsoft with less and less revenue over time. iTunesThe decision to pull back from Windows Media could be a reflection of this reality, he said. "It is conceivable that Mac users simply aren't interested in it and they prefer Mac's own media software.

Microsoft updates software for call centers
InfoWorld - Jan 18, 2006
The new software now can integrate Citrix-based applications into the unified interface, he said. In addition, Microsoft has added a new agent desktop workflow that helps an agent through the process of serving a customer, Thirumurthy said. "Typically, an agent will go through five or 10 applications, such as CRM [customer relationship management], billing and order entry," he said. "This walks them through that process. They don't have to remember every task, every workflow, everything they need to do and in what order. "A typical deployment of CCF, which costs $100 per user seat and is available now, also requires licenses for Microsoft's Windows Server and SharePoint Portal Server software, Thirumurthy said.

Now let's take a look at the portfolio and some of the
moves we made this week. One quick note: Ones are stocks we would buy now, while
Twos are stocks we would buy only on a pullback from
current levels. And as a reminder:
-- A Game Breaker is going to change the landscape of an
industry, as Intel, Microsoft and Wal-Mart did in their
sectors. Investors can make big money in these stocks by
getting in before the crowd. -- Inflection Point stocks have a broken business model
that's on the mend but has yet to be recognized by the
market. Investors who recognize a turnaround early can
pocket strong returns. -- Stealth Stocks are often unknown names to the general
public, but can be hugely profitable investments,
especially when they score well in the Alpha component of
our proprietary rating system... This is a common practice among
soon-to-be acquired software companies as salespeople want
to lock in as many commissions as possible before the
transition takes place. Also, we believe the on-demand
segment of the CRM market continues to grow at a double-
digit percentage clip, which will benefit RightNow's
future sales and cash-flow results. Even so, shares are a
full 58. 50% above our cost basis, so we will wait for a
pullback to $15 to make a purchase. A move closer to $22 a
share would likely prompt a sale.

Scottish city takes on Novell's GroupWise
InfoWorld - Jan 13, 2006
It has also had to deal with IBM's Lotus Notes, which has a hold on the high-end of the market, said Eric Woods, government practice director for Ovum Ltd. "Novell has had to try and maintain a position in that space the two giants have been fighting over," Woods said. Local governments tend to allocate funds first for front-line CRM (customer relationship management) programs that can improve delivery of services to their customers, the taxpayers, Woods said. But they are increasingly looking toward productivity software, albeit on a slower scale than their private-sector counterparts, he said. The council budgeted about £500,000 (US$883,000) for the first year of the upgrade, including implementation and consulting, officials said. GroupWise was the cheapest of the four software packages as far as total cost of ownership, Storr said. The council signed a five-year contract with Novell last February.

It produced about $200 million in revenues last year--about a 10% growth rate. CDC Software is attempting to add to its portfolio--a down-market version of what software giant Oracle Corp. And that's what led it to Onyx, a small, Seattle company that specializes in CRM.

3G Telecoms: Mobile age
VNUNet.com - Jan 5, 2006
The fact that corporates are discussing whether mobile video conferencing canadd value to their organisations, is indicative of how far 3G has come. It alsogoes some way tosuggest that the most expensive auction of all time and one of the biggestbusiness gambles ever could well be about to pay off. Box: Application ProvidersMicrosoft has made a very substantial investment in mobile data. JasonLangridge, UK mobility business manager at Microsoft, believes that business useof mobile data querying tools and data exchange is now very much a reality. ForLangridge, one of the main ROI cases, beyond mobile email, is businessintelligence. “Getting the executive dashboard with KPIs on your mobile deviceout of office over a cellular network is very powerful – especially when you candrill into the numbers. We are going to see a lot more of this,” he says... David Russell, director of telecom solutions for SAP, says that a number ofcorporates are already taking advantage of mobile solutions. “We’ve focused onbusiness intelligence, on management information and “anywhere, anytime”reporting. Customer relationship management (CRM) is also an important mobileapplication for the enterprise. "What we have is a mobile server at the enterprise office that takes the SAPscreens and renders them for a multitude of devices. The challenge is all aboutwhat is practical and pragmatic for the device. Basically, this is all availablenow. People do not have to wait for more bandwidth, they can equip their mobilestaff today.

Design Gets Its Due in Davos
BusinessWeek - Jan 10, 2006
"BEYOND LIP SERVICE. Frankly, it doesn't get much better than this when it comes to a serious discussion about the use of design thinking as a management methodology. As Roger Martin puts it: "I think the reason innovation and design has percolated to the top of the WEF agenda is that big companies the world over have woken up to the fact that they have organized and controlled their firms to the point of stultification by using ERP [enterprise-resource planning], CRM [customer-relationship management], TQM [total quality management], and other reliability-oriented systems. They need to think in a fundamentally different way to reinvigorate their firms, and so they're reaching out to design and innovation. "In short, innovation, creativity, design -- whatever you want to call it -- is the new Six Sigma. The overarching question shaping the Davos program is, How do you operationalize innovation? How do you go beyond giving lip service to creativity, which is where 95% of all U.

Oracle fees favour Sun users
VNUNet.com - Jan 9, 2006
“But it would be nice if users could understand theindependent research that gives these particular scalars. ”In his blog, controversial technology writer Nicholas Carr described Oracle’smove as the “latest sign that the traditional software pricing model is comingapart at the seams”, as software giants struggle to deal with multicore chipsand other trends such as virtualisation, open source and hosting. However, Oracle’s new pricing policy still falls short of matching that ofMicrosoft and some open-source rivals, which charge per processor socket ratherthan counting cores. Hardware Today: Dell Server Snapshot
Server Watch - Jan 9, 2006
Even within that category, however, its towers are split into two categories — value towers and performance towers. By "value," Dell means the servers are priced from $349 to $549 — an aggressive price for a full-featured server. The SC430, for example, comes with a Celeron, Pentium 4, or Pentium D dual-core processor, and a choice of operating systems (Microsoft SBS 2003, Windows Server 2003, Red Hat Linux, or Novell's SUSE Linux). As this server is basically a step up from a simple peer-to-peer network and typically acts as a small business' first server, customers can choose the lowest-cost options and walk away with a decent box for around $400. Moving up the tower line, the PowerEdge 830 has the same processor choices as the SC430. The 830 also has several optional features: RAID, SATA, or SCSI cards and hot-pluggable SCSI drives... It is designed for clustering, e-commerce, and database applications. Some companies are moving core databases running SQL Server or Oracle from older systems onto the 6800. Others are using it for e-commerce, CRM, and ERP. Fruehe mentions PeopleSoft and SAP as examples of ERP applications that can be run on this machine. "Demand is typically for back-end systems that have been on a proprietary RISC-based Unix hardware in the past, or maybe 4-way Intel," says Fruehe. "With 64-bit, there's better memory use and performance. "
While towers are certainly a mainstay of the Dell portfolio, its best-selling model is actually a 2U rack — the PowerEdge 2850.
